Way to check file version

Is there a way to check the files' version prior to download it? We’re asking because we want to make the update process automatic, and knowing the files' version or at least their timestamp before downloading them would be more efficient, as we’d get them only when they’re being effectively updated instead of blindly download the files for example every night.
